The Civic Museums of Venice presents at the Museum Palazzo Mocenigo – White Room an installation by Matthias Schaller consisting of two independent photographic series “Tessuto Urbano” (2022) and “Lagunenwalzer” (2012). Through the 53 works on display, the german photographer synthesizes his own imagery of the contemporary city, inspired by De Barbari’s famous 16th-century “veduta”.

The series “Tessuto Urbano” portrays the seven Sestieri of Venice through a succession of seven shots obtained from the same seventeenth-century lace belonging to the Burano Museum Collection. Each photograph reproduces, according to a reduced scale reproduction, a Venetian Sestiere, guiding the viewer among the intricate finishes of the fabric that become the “calli” and “campielli” of the city. The lace, a symbol of the lagoon’s textile manufacturing past and presence, has stimulated the artist’s historical soul and is a metaphor for the city urban dimension of the city.

“Lagunenwalzer”, that goes along with the “merletto” is a selection of 46 vinyl records taken from a venetian archive of punk music. The records, in their tight succession, become the correlative of water that seeps into Venice and constitutes its peculiarity. The etched-surface vinyls outline the horizon of the view, and their provocative titles allude to the revolutionary yet latent spirit of the city.

Matthias Schaller with his eye fond of the Venetian reality, to which he already dedicated seventh project, by using the strategy of the indirect portraiture to propose an alternative image of Venice to the more common city map. In this exhibition lace and vinyl are the figures of an immersive metaphor of Venice, reflecting on the past of the city and directly addressed to the viewer. The pictures activate our imagination without imposing the spatial delimitation to which topography forces us.

_

The visit at the exhibition is included in Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo’s ticket

FIBER ART
Anna Moro-Lin donation

From 2 February to 1 October 2023
Venice, Palazzo Mocenigo Museum

Curated by Chiara Squarcina

Anna Moro-Lin’s art has become part of history through the donation of her works to the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo – Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia. This extremely generous gesture will provide the opportunity to explore an important branch of fiber art, and to follow its development though the characteristic traits of the work of this artist from the Lido, a member of an ancient Venetian family that has always promoted culture and its dissemination.

The creations of Anna Moro-Lin enable us to appreciate the intrinsic value of textiles, which when freed through fibre art become a versatile material for original artistic expression. This fundamental principle motivates Palazzo Mocenigo Museum’s desire to continue as a Study Centre. Moreover, the donated works stimulate comparative interpretations with respect to the other collections of fibre art held by the museum.
Nor should we forget that the main exponents of this field of art originated and developed in the lagoon area and have had a national and international influence. This solo exhibition will provide an in-depth look not only at Lin’s art but also her evolution, which involved overcoming the limitations that restricted the expressiveness associated with this type of art.

Today, these works are a decisive component in understanding the wider context of visual art forms that increasingly feel a more pressing need to intersect and interconnect with reality and assume a bold and promising visionary approach.
With Anna Moro-Lin, tradition is not disregarded but assimilated and transcended in order to translate ideas and psychological insights embedded in contemporary life: uneasiness, loneliness and the search for knowledge of an unidentifiable self, yet one that in some way can interweave with material fibres and reconstruct a credible and truthful identity.

Devoted to Palazzo Mocenigo’s vocation for and interest in perfume, Es-senze, exhibition part of MUVE Contemporaneo programme, presents a group of artists who have risen to prominence since the start of the new millennium.

A generation of artists who are important members of the international creative scene and who have drawn inspiration for their work from perfume and the sense of smell; artists who differ in culture and idiom but share a perspective that prompts them to explore, each in their own way, an alternative creative dimension to the usual ones.

Twelve olfactory installations are on display in the first-floor rooms of Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo in the form of an original itinerary: a virtual, immersive, multisensory journey interpreted in three-dimensional, pictorial, graphic and installation form.
Almost as if art could actually emit its own perfume, the works on display envelop viewers in a broad spectrum of fragrances in equally extensive tones, as numerous as the many sensations they are able to evoke.

The artists in the show are Mircea Cantor, Mateusz Chorobski, Jason Dodge, Bruna Esposito, Eva Marisaldi, Florian Mermin, Giuseppe Penone, Paola Pivi, Namsal Siedlecki, Achraf Touloub, Nico Vascellari and Luca Vitone.

at Palazzo Mocenigo

From 21 December 2021 until 16 February 2022

Last September, Alberta Ferretti hosted a fashion show event at Ca’ Rezzonico in support of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia to celebrate the 1600th anniversary of the foundation of Venice. These special pieces can be viewed inside of the Portego of Palazzo Mocenigo Center of Studies Fabric, Costume and Perfume, starting 21 December 2021 until mid-February 2022.

A selection of eight unique pieces from the “A tribute to Venice” collection enriches the large hall of Palazzo Mocenigo, which was once used to celebrate Venetian nobility. The blown Murano glass jewels by artist Massimiliano Schiavon made exclusively for Alberta Ferretti complete the dresses.

To recreate the mise en scène of a fashion show, a catwalk with reflective black glass welcomes these unique pieces, creating a dialogue between the clothing and the historical, decorative room.

Once the exhibition ends, the pieces will be donated to the Museum of Palazzo Mocenigo and become a part of its permanent collection, further solidifying the bond between Alberta Ferretti and the city of Venice.

The extraordinary creation of flowers made with minuscule glass beads is a “family affair” for Benedetta Gaggia; it’s a passion inherited from her mother Mariagrazia Gaggia, who learnt this handcraft work from the legendary Donna Nella Lopez y Royo Sammartini. Benedetta still also uses Murano’s old “conterie” which are now stored in the family Palazzo.

Benedetta creates buds and multicoloured petals, sometimes inspired by real flowers other times by the artist’s imagination, revitalizing the old “conterie” handcraft work, which in old times was very popular in Venice. Today this technique has almost disappeared.

For the 2021 Glass Week, the stunning rooms of Palazzo Mocenigo will present Seabead flowers, an exhibition curated by Cristina Beltrami: a selection of about forty unique pieces, expressly made by Benedetta Gaggia, will be shown in the extraordinary 17th century portego of Palazzo Mocenigo.

A little-known aspect of Leonardo da Vinci will come to light in this exhibition organised to mark the fifth centenary of his death: his work as a cosmetologist and perfumer, dedicated to the creation of fragrances and cosmetics. A reconstruction of the lively network of exchanges between the major Renaissance courts enables us to learn of the experiments and recipes for cosmetics that Leonardo shared with the most important female figures of the day.

Also on show will be pioneering recipes for depilatory ointments, creams made from snail slime and hair dyes. Leonardo even influenced hairstyles: “Da Vinci knots” are found in many paintings in which hairstyles are embellished with jewels, nets and perfumed fabrics.

At the court of Ludovico il Moro in Milan, Leonardo organised parties, designed clothes and costumes, as well as inventing fabrics, jewels and perfumes. The exhibition will highlight the link between Milan and Venice: two cities where the use of perfume was widespread and hairdressers commonly sold cosmetics and perfumes. A specific role in the service of the court was dedicated to a “magister of perfumes”, who procured for the ladies little phials of mixtures for bleaching the hair, a very popular fashion in Venice.

The project has been conceived by scholar Maria Pirulli and conducted by Cosmetica Italia – Associazione nazionale imprese cosmetiche and Accademia del Profumo in collaboration with Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna.

A traveller who contemplates the infinite horizon, the invisible that escapes the eye: here is our imaginary Venetian merchant, an indomitable wayfarer ready to encounter danger and destiny in order to acquire the most precious and rare raw materials.

Carnet de voyage is an illustrated olfactory journey that enlightens visitors about the origin of The Merchant of Venice perfumes in a dimension suspended between fantasy and reality.

Drawings by Guido Fuga, a great friend and collaborator of Hugo Pratt, the perfumed tales of Joan Giacomin, and an interactive and multi-sensorial exhibition of spices and mysterious raw materials, take visitors on a journey where noses lead the way, immersed in a time warp in which every stage corresponds to an olfactory dream of discoveries, loves, deceits, challenges, legends and superstitions with an invisible main character – Perfume – sought over the centuries by Venetian merchants who sailed the seas towards the furthest flung destinations.

And now the Venetian perfume tradition contained in The Merchant of Venice fragrances, linked to the fairy tale nature of the lead character’s imaginary journey, offers a present-day interpretation of a thousand-year-old Venetian story whose enchantment and magic can still make us dream.

January 20 > August 26, 2018
Venice, Museum of Palazzo Mocenigo

_

After the radical restyling and expansion of the exhibition spaces in 2013 to include the new museum itineraries dedicated to perfume, the layout on the first floor of the Palazzo Mocenigo Museum has been remodelled to accommodate a splendid selection of Eastern fabrics and garments, the property of the Fondazione di Venezia and specifically part of the collections at Palazzo Mocenigo’s Centre for the History of Textiles and Costume.

The display is a further focus on the ever-present and topical theme of the relationship between Venice and the East and enhances the museum’s itinerary with a spectacular array of original clothes and accessories. Venice has always been in contact with the East, and more than one member of the Mocenigo family – one of the most important and prestigious Venetian aristocratic dynasties – contributed to maintaining and advancing this important commercial and cultural exchange.
Today at Palazzo Mocenigo this chapter of Venetian history is amplified by the display of twenty or so of the most representative examples from the museum’s splendid collection of over four hundred artefacts, which includes both Eastern and Western clothes, fabrics and religious vestments belonging to the maternal family of Mariano Fortuny.
The nucleus is of particular interest because it was a constant source of inspiration for Fortuny himself in his activities as a fabric and fashion designer, and because it helps to visually reconstruct the ancient but never dormant link between Venice and the East.

_

The focus on relations between Venice and the East, which has led to the restructuring of the museum itinerary on the first floor of Palazzo Mocenigo, is consolidated in the White Room on the ground floor, dedicated to temporary exhibitions, by an interesting insight into the symbolism and decoration of Japanese fabrics, in particular the katagami and katazome style elements. The many examples of weaving and printing on show, which are part of the private collections of the curator of the exhibition Franco Passarello, Ishimi Ousugi and Nancy Stetson Martin, clearly demonstrate the long tradition and high quality of clothes worn in Japan.
Before the twentieth century, Japan was a country of weavers, where artisans created superb fabrics from the natural fibres silk and cotton, working with looms and dyeing vats in the courtyards.
The different stencil carving techniques demonstrate the professional quality of the craftsmen who, from generation to generation, have passed on the refinements of their work.
On display are extraordinary garments and fabrics printed with the katazome technique, exhibited together with nineteenth and early twentieth-century katagami stencil patterns used for this purpose, which correspond to the Edo and Meiji periods. Drawings and details carved with specific implements become more than mere tools employed for work but in themselves highly artistic artefacts. On show in addition to the stencils are finished garments or parts of them, which demonstrate where possible the correspondence between the stencils and the finished fabrics.

French artist Brigitte Selles (Angers, 1959) is very skilled in weaving and knotting felt, her chosen material, but she does it in her own way. She would like to collect the whole world in one embrace, liberating it from the atrocities and wars that afflict it today. To achieve this, she tries to overcome the barriers that images create by pushing our thoughts beyond the work to discover another space and another time. Visually, the result of her patient knotting is voluptuous and elegant, but above all it is new. It is an innovative way of communicating without canvas, without brushes and without colours. The knot is its structure, as in the best French tradition of the Aubusson or Savonnerie carpets, which narrate stories knotted and woven by hand. Similarly, Brigitte Selles presents us today with works of the same intensity but with a completely different conceptual approach: she in fact minimises the complexity of the work by using the essentiality of white, which gives her tapestries an extraordinary force and restores to them the philosophy of thought intact. Loving her native town, Selles follows its famous tradition: on exhibit in Angers is the largest textile artefact of all time: the famous Apocalypse of St. John, a biblical story 140 metres long by 6 metres high, entirely woven by hand in the Middle Ages.

The sixteenth-century city painted by the artist is revealed in the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo.

On the occasion of the celebrations for the five-hundredth anniversary of Tintoretto’s birth, the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo is hosting a fascinating exhibition within its permanent collection, revealing the forms and colours of the clothes worn at the time, through a display of reconstructions of Renaissance garments, worn by the characters portrayed in Tintoretto’s works, and their “existential choreography”.

What is revealed is a world full of symbolic references that are often incomprehensible to the contemporary observer. The exhibition thus offers a unique opportunity to learn about the historical context and dive into sixteenth-century Venice, exploring the fashion and taste of the era. The velvets, damasks, brocades that embellish the protagonists of Tintoretto’s paintings will be visible in the exhibition alongside some vintage artefacts from the museum collections: the famous 32 cm-high shoes, Calcagnini, and the men’s corset, the Cuoietto. Moreover, in this journey into the past, in order to make the memory even more vivid, copies of the clothes worn by the characters portrayed by the artist will be presented.

Thanks to the involvement of Stefano Nicolao and his students of the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, of the “Sartoria Poetica” – professional tailors who work at the Accademia da Ponte in Vittorio Veneto – and a series of significant loans from the Elio Dal Cin collection, an expression of the great artistic craftsmanship of the time, it will be possible to relive this distant world in settings that show them off to best effect.

Along with other exhibitions on the theme realised alongside the new section dedicated to the history of perfume and essences – which was added to the new layout of the museum in 2013 – the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo is presenting a large selection of scent bottles from the Magnani collection.

It is common knowledge that perfume and its containers were for centuries reserved for a few privileged people who, even through these tiny objects, sought to show off their wealth and their love of beauty or of the “marvellous”.

These extraordinary artefacts are the passion of Monica Magnani, an ‘omnivorous’ collector of antique scent bottles, who embarked on her quest following the purchase of a small silver object from a noble Venetian family. What was later discovered to be a German perfume box of the seventeenth century set the parameters that now characterise the over 850 scent bottles in her collection: antiquity, the unusual and small size, all less than 10 centimetres.

Developed over time with meticulous and passionate research, discoveries, choices and study, the collection ranges from the ‘unguentaria’ of the first centuries after Christ to early-twentieth-century pieces via some rare examples of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It also covers the great variety typical of production throughout the nineteenth century, and includes the chatelaines worn at dances or used for tiny French love tokens, or made with Murano and Bohemia glass or, also, as some of the many souvenirs of the Grand Tour.

The exhibition laid out in the Androne, the White Room and the piano nobile of Palazzo Mocenigo and curated by Chiara Squarcina and Monica Magnani, presents a selection of 225 scent bottles divided into 10 thematic areas – Chronology, Toys, Souvenirs, Techniques, Nature, Love tokens, Containers, Chatelaines, Tiny and Masterpieces – displayed on the basis of an original interpretation that reveals their intrinsic significance: not only as containers for scent but almost as a ‘manifestation’ of a mood or feeling.

The exhibition is further embellished with a showcase displaying rare vintage advertisements and another featuring antique books on perfume and cosmetics provided by the Biblioteca della Bellezza di Cosmetica Italia – Milan (formerly Unipro – Unione nazionale industrie di profumeria, cosmesi, saponi di toletta e affini).

Also on show is the original sketch by Gino Boccasile for Vidal’s Lauro Olivo advertisement, kindly loaned by Mavive for the occasion.

Here, then, is a fascinating journey, that started from Venice and in Venice finds its logical venue, to discover an extraordinary hand-made production that has flourished over the years with a unique imagination and technical ability.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.

Curated by Chiara Squarcina and Monica Magnani

The perfume bottle has always been and still is an extraordinary opportunity for virtuoso achievements, where flair of execution is combined with the choice of precious materials, such as gold and silver, and the application of sophisticated techniques, among them enamelling and engraving, to create a prodigious aesthetic and chromatic balance that emulates the perfection of nature, which may itself provide special materials, such as marine shells, plants and exotic barks.

The exhibition of the extraordinary glass collection of the Storp family, who in 1911 founded Drom Fragrances in Munich, further explores a theme already present in the permanent exhibition at the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo. The result is an extensive journey into the magical world of perfume bottles, where practicality often gives way to elegance. This is especially true of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the desire to impress was paramount. The bottles in the collection on display translate perfection and beauty into miniature form; they testify to a world that knew how to imbue even functional objects with a theatricality intended to enhance personal elegance.

The goldsmith’s art and the 1990s, reinterpreted through the creations of six Swedish artists who have each explored their own exclusive paths, forms the subject of this exhibition at the White Room on the ground floor of Palazzo Mocenigo.

As part of the MUVE Contemporaneo project, this new space, dedicated to temporary exhibitions and consistent in all respects with the identity of Palazzo Mocenigo as a textile and costume museum, will show artists’ work from the permanent collection at the National Museum of Sweden.

The pieces are not conventional jewellery: subliminal messages, references and symbolism are contained in these aesthetically beautiful and fascinating ornaments. The use of non-precious materials, such as aluminium powder, horsehair and fish skin, redefines the values traditionally associated with the goldsmith’s art.

The decision to work with simple materials subverts perceptions we usually hold regarding jewellery.

From May 12th to September 25th, 2016
Venice, Museum of Palazzo Mocenigo

_

In continuity with the permanent activities dedicated to perfume, Palazzo Mocenigo now presents a project that narrates the centuries-old relationship between perfume and the artistic excellence of Murano glass. It is a modular and multi-faceted exhibition that traces the evolution of the two main and most ancient applied arts of Venice: glass blowing and perfumery. This exhibition describes their development up to the modern era, becoming the natural interpretation of the city’s contemporary spirit.

The creation of value: this is the core element of this initiative. Such value is both born and embodied within the structural processes of the creation: 12 Murano master glass blowers from the Consorzio Promovetro – managing authority for the Vetro Artistico® Murano trademark – create 12 masterpieces (1 exemplar per creation), each with its own unique value. The master glass blowers work with 12 designers: 6 junior designers from the IED design institute and 6 senior designers from different creative sectors.

Beginning on 15 March, each master glass blower will work with a designer. Subsequently, the master perfumers of The Merchant of Venice will present the relevant 12 exclusive fragrances. These fragrances will perfectly interpret the masterpieces and the history of artistic manufacturing that, over the years, have become the identity matrix of Venice.

The overall exhibition serves to re-propose the museum’s existing display of Murano glass perfume bottles, one already enhanced with other collections. These masterfully created bottles – from different eras, made by different techniques, and featuring different finishes – are lasting testaments to the continuing importance to perfumers of discovering prestigious containers that will give a shape to the intangible. Crowning this initiative will be numerous other events and parallel activities.

On 8 October 2016, this initiative will officially conclude with an auction held in the IED design institute at Palazzo Franchetti in Venice. On auction will be the 12 masterpieces, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Palazzo Mocenigo Museum.

extended until September 4th, 2016

_

The renovated spaces on the ground floor of palazzo Mocenigo, restored with the support of Mavive and inaugurated last June, offer a Multimedia Room, a Perfume Laboratory and a white room destined for events and temporary exhibitions.

It was only fitting that the museum of San Stae, already host of the Study Center for Textile History, would promote from the 11th of December 2015 to the 10th of April 2016 a “journey” through the different natural dying techniques of textiles.

The exhibition, entitled – The Alchemy of Colour- while explaining one of our first technological enterprise, reveals how human evolution, both cultural and economical and scientific advancement have always gone hand in hand.

Curated by Stefano Panconesi, Sissi Castellano, Chiara Squarcina and Augusto Panini the display presents primary materials and products of the dyeing process.

Mainly base textiles and hanks, they are the result of a natural process created using a colour palette derived from natural colours- roots, stems, bark, leaves, flowers, fruits and some insects- from witch the original pigments are obtained: yellow, red, blue, orange, green and purple.

THE RAPE OF VENICE
Andrea Morucchio

From June, 6 to November, 22, 2015
Venice, Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo

_

A multimedia and multi-sensorial installation, The Rape of Venice comprises a number of visual elements – projections of the titles on the subject of saving Venice published in international periodicals and a floor depicting the deconstructed mosaic from St Mark’s Basilica – sounds, including underwater recordings and the noise of the traffic in the lagoon, and smells, with fragrances inspired by the “smell of seaweed below zero”, evoked by Iosif Brodskij, a Venetian by adoption.

Through the synergy of these elements, the work aims to make the observer aware of Venice’s decline, from living city and unique heritage for the world to tourist theme park and object of cultural and environmental devastation. The theme of sustainability explored in EXPO 2015 is here examined in reference to the fragile lagoon environment and the phenomena underlining its amphibious culture, evoked by the fragrance of its primordial element, seaweed.

Created especially by the experts of Mavive after months of olfactive analysis of the lagoon environment, samples will be made and distributed to visitors in a limited series of small phials containing the quintessence of Venice.

Gea

_

XXIV International Contemporary Art Textile Exhibition dedicated to Maria Lai

_

from June 5th to August 30, 2015
Venezia, Palazzo Mocenigo

_

Extended until November 15th

_

The small yet incredible creations of Miniartextil return this year to Palazzo Mocenigo in collaboration with the Associazione Arte&Arte of Como, which organises this show – which is unique in Europe – by selecting the finest international artistic production in the field of Textile Art or Fibre Art.

Gea, the Great Mother, is the theme that has inspired the artists from 22 nations. The Earth is analysed from every point of view – from its products to its wealth, from its colours to the various kinds of life it shelters – while recalling the deep ties linking living beings and the planet, thanks also to the succession of seasons: a continuous alternation between birth and death, generation and destruction.

The Museo di San Stae, dedicated to the history of fashion, and completely renewed in layout and museum design, opens its doors once more to the contemporary scene. On show are 54 “mini-textiles” made by revolutionised schema and materials, selected by a commission chaired by Luciano Caramel.

The exhibition also includes an installation by Manabu Hangai, while Patrizia Polese offers her butterflies, I Love You 1 and I Love You 2, and the Japanese artist presents a work entitled A Woods.

Besides Palazzo Mocenigo, this year, MINIARTEXTIL will take place in two other important venetian museums: at the Museo del Vetro di Murano (Murano Glass Museum) and at the Museo del Merletto di Burano (Lace Museum) will be respectively on display A woods, by the Japanese artist Machiko Agano and Storia Universale (1982) by Maria Lai, a tribute to the Italian artist who have been a key figure for the international textile art and a sophisticated interpreter of a feminine artistic world, died in 2013.
